Sixth Pick

The Resume Center scored sixth in our results because of the ordering headache we ran into. The rest of the service didn't have any major issues but also didn't stand out. The ordering issue may have been a one-off mistake, but left us feeling frustrated.

How We Perform Our Reviews:

Our reviews are broken down by a few major criteria:

1. Quality - The quality of the products and services by the company should meet or exceed the amount needed or paid for (keeping in mind the price paid). Not just from the perception of how "clean" the resume appears or how smooth the wording is, but the results it generates for the client. Remember, appearances mean little if the resume doesn't get you the interview. The job of the resume is to position you in the best light possible for the specific job you're applying for. This is the most important review point in our determination of our ratings.

2. Customer service - Resumes require quite a bit of interaction and communication to assure a quality finished product. The ease at which the service company communicates will make it much easier on you and usually achieves a higher quality finished product. We include the ease of communication as well as the responsiveness and friendliness in our ratings.

3. Reliability - Some companies perform great for one client, but terrible for the next. Consistency and reliability is important so you can be confident your results will exceed expectations. We find the best companies for reliability tend to be those who are larger than 1 person but still small since they can handle the workload but have professionals in place who can create excellent results on a daily basis.

4. Client Results and Feedback - We receive information on companies from customers both by getting feedback from clients after they hire companies and also by manually reviewing the results from those companies. At the end of the day results is what matters. We place this fourth on the list because the accuracy of the feedback can sometimes be difficult to judge depending on numerous factors, but when you see a trend then it becomes apparent how a company performs on a consistent basis.

5. Ease of Use - It is important to have the ability to easily pay. Some of the sites we reviewed were difficult to pay with, used questionable payment services, or simply didn't accept the usual forms of payment. It also is dependent on how user friendly it was to work with the service company. For example some services relied only on email interaction while others made it simple to use with customer portals and a website interface that made it simple to have all the work done.

The Major (Critical) Difference In How Resume Services Perform Their Work...

Resume services are typically operate one of two different ways.

1) Experts who are well indoctrinated by the recruitment industry write or run the service.

The benefits of this is straight forward. You have someone who understands how the industry works and more importantly... what works on resumes so you get results. The trade off is naturally these services tend to be much more expensive since you're hiring someone who has experience and understands the intricacies of the hiring process.

2) "Writers" who improve the phrasing and appearance of your resume.

Writers are in quotes above because usually these are either people overseas or in college who have limited writing experience. Sometimes you will get an experienced writer in the U.S. to perform these services, but expect to pay extra.

Like many things in life, the results you are likely to achieve are relative to the amount you pay for the service. If you insist on basement level pricing then don't expect your resume to perform miracles. Many of the complaints we reviewed were based around the fact someone wanted miracles to happen while paying less than fair amounts to the companies. Keep your expectations in line with what you pay. If you are applying for a low level position then don't invest as much money into your job search. If, however, you are expecting to make around 6-figures or more then it would be wise to invest a significant amount into your job search. The difference can be easily made up in your first month on the job.
